TARFU: LaBrada Nutrition Financed Study Finds no Effect of Super Charge Xtreme N.O. on Training Induced Increases in Muscle Size. Minor Effects on 1RM Max.

As mentioned in previous blogposts, I highly credit all supplement companies which - instead of just putting out untenable claims about the "steroid-like" effects of their products - spend a few bucks of their immense marketing budgets on research on how fantastic their products actually are. In the case of LaBrada Nutrition's Super Charge Xtreme N.O. it does yet seem that it would have been wiser to do some research before formulating their new "NO booster".

Other than the guys over at LaBrada Nutrition probably have hoped or even expected, the study (JSCR. 2011) that was published in the March issue of the well-known Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research found no "significant improvements in LBM over the placebo drink" and only minor increases in bench press 1RM and squat power, which may well be attributed to CNS stimulation due to the hefty 450mg load of caffeine each serving of Super Charge Xtreme N.O. contains.

Other than that, the "15 physically active, resistance trained, college age (19.5 +/- 0.269 yr) males" in the placebo group attained the same changes in body weight, body [as measured via dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA)] and maximal strength in the rest of the 8 different exercises of their 3-day/week exercise regimen:
A main effect for time was identified for each of the 1RM strength measures tested (p<0.05) except biceps curls (p = 0.34). [....] Significant main effects were found for lean body mass (F1/22 = 20.32, p<0.001), but there were no significant group x time interactions for changes in LBM (F1/22 = 0.142 p = 0.710).
But let's be honest. Did you still believe an NO booster will improve your gains? I, for my part, take them for the feeling of being pumped up. And although I have not yet had the chance to test this particular product, I am inclined to believe that it will provide similar results as the classics like NO Xplode & Co - that kind of cosmetic pump you either love or hate.

Energy Drinks Increase Resting Metabolic Rate, But Do Not Influence Energy Expenditure During Exercise

Ever wondered, whether the drink that was once rumored to contain "taurine from bull sperm" and similar fashionable "energy drinks" are of any use? Well, a recent study (Nienhuesser. 2011) coming from an international team of scientists showed that the consumption of each and every of the three energy drinks used in this study lead to a statistically significant increase in resting metabolic rate (RMR).
[...] in a randomly assigned cross-over design, the subjects consumed 473 ml of one of three commercially available energy drinks or a placebo and then RMR and RER [respiratory exchange ratio; i.e. a measure of the relative amount of fat/carbs that is used as fuel] were measured 1 hour later.  The subjects then engaged in 15 minutes of treadmill exercise at 50% of V02max, during which RER and oxygen consumption (VO2) were measured. RMR was not changed by placebo, but increased (P<0.05, means ± se) above baseline by 10 ± 2.5%, 15.0 ± 2.9%, and 15.3 ± 2.9%, following Energy Drink One, Energy Drink Two, and Energy Drink Three (respectively) [...]
In view of the stimulating effect, some of the ingredients (cf. Table 1) of these chemical containing beverages exhibit, these results do not come as a surprise.

What may be surprising, however, is that the study results suggest that - at least from a "calorie expenditure" point of view - the consumption of an energy drink before exercise appears to be less effective than drinking it after exercise or at your desk at the office...

Gadgetry & Caffeine a Dynamic Duo for Sleep Deprivation and, Consequently, Obesity in School-Aged Children

Ever wondered what your children do, when you send them to bed in the evening? According to the results of a study from the Department of Family and Community Health at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, they probably drink Coke and watch TV or play video-games. Does not sound too bad? Well, Calamaro et al. found that children who
drank caffeinated beverages had 15 fewer minutes of sleep per night than did children who did not drink such beverages (b = –0.27, P = .002). Children with three technology items in their bedroom received 45 fewer minutes of sleep than did children without these items in their bedroom (b = –0.75, P = .010).
Still not impressed? What if I told you that these kids missed out on 15 to 60 minutes of what - to my mind - is the most healthiest, most anabolic and most lipolytic time of the day (sleep), and that the study provides evidence for the hypothesis that the immediate consequence of caffeine induced sleep deprivation is obesity? If you do now reconsider whether your 7 year old really needs his own TV-set and whether plain water ain't no viable alternative for Red Bull and Coca Cola, you've already taken the first step to make a change that could - in the years to come - save your children from turning from the "fat guy / girl" in elementary school into the fat and diabetic guy / girl at high school.

Low Dose Caffeine Ameliorates Catabolic Effects and Increases AMPK and PPAR Expression During Reduced Food Intake in Mice

Caffeine, "the mother of all stimulants", has lately developed a bad reputation. Stress, Cortisol, Adrenal Fatique, Insulin Resistance etc. are only the most recognized buzzwords occurring within the context of caffeine consumption. A very recent paper (Shermann. 2011) coming from scientists from the University of Jerusalem draws a wholly different picture.

Shermann et al. investigated the effect of caffeine consumption (3.5 mg/kg/day or 7 mg/kg/day) on circadian rhythms and expression of disease and metabolic markers in mice under two distinct dietary conditions over a period of sixteen weeks. When the rats were fed an ad libitum diet (meaning they could consume as much food as they wanted), ...
caffeine reduced the average daily mRNA levels of certain disease and inflammatory markers, such as liver alpha fetoprotein (Afp), C-reactive protein (Crp), jejunum alanine aminotransferase (Alt), growth arrest and DNA damage 45β (Gadd45β), Interleukin 1α (Il-1α), Il-1β mRNA and serum plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1).
For those of you who still want to shed some pounds of fat, it may yet be even more interesting to read that "caffeine supplementation led to decreased expression of catabolic factors under RF". With the RF = restricted feeding condition being comparable to what is known as "intermittent fasting" in the fitness community, this finding is highly significant.

This is particularly valid given the fact that there was a highly significant increase in PPAR-Gamma, PPAR-Alpha (cf. figure 1) and AMPK (not shown) activities in the group receiving "high dose" (7mg/kg; for humans this would equal a pretty low dose of about 0.6mg/kg) caffeine. Both, peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR), as well as AMPK are regarded as master metabolic regulators that have been implicated in the physiology of fat loss. A moderate caffeine consumption, i.e. about one cup of coffee, in the course of an intermittent fast, may thus well spare muscle protein and burn body fat, at the same time.

Burn Additional 27 kcal with 6mg/kg Caffeine Pre-Workout

Caffeine is the cornerstone of almost each and every fat-burner on the market. But how effective is it in raising your energy expenditure? A study (Astorino. 2011) conducted at the Department of Kinesiology of the California State University provides an answer: Not very effective.

Astorino et al. had 14 strength-trained men who were regular caffeine consumers perform a strength workout with either 6mg/kg (thanks to Ezhan who pointed me to a type here. It's 6mg not 0.6 as it said before) caffeine or placebo supplement pre-workout. What they found was that
Caffeine intake increased total energy expenditure by 15% (P<0.05), but the additional calories burned was minimal (+27 kcal).
Well, I suppose this is about the amount of calories of a small carrot and not really what you would expect from a fat burner.

Creatine + Caffeine = No-Go? Still Nothing but a Myth

You probably have heard both that a) caffeine would negate the ergogenic effects of creatine loading and b) that the latter is nothing but one of those gym-myths which just won't disappear.

A recent study by scientists from the Department of Recreational Sports Management, Yu Da University, Miaoli, Taiwan (Lee. 2011) provides practical evidence that "the no caffeine when on creatine"-advice is garbage. The scientists investigated the effects of acute caffeine ingestion on intermittent high-intensity sprint performance after 5 days of creatine loading and found no detrimental effects of 0.6mg/kg caffeine on the creatine induced increase in exercise performance. What's more the ergogenic effect of caffeine added to that of creatine, so that ...
[...] the mean and peak power observed in the CRE + CAF were significantly higher than those found in the CON during Sprints 1 and 3; and the CRE + CAF showed significantly higher mean and peak power than that in the CRE + PLA during Sprints 1 and 2. [...] Heart rates, plasma lactate, and glucose increased significantly with CRE + CAF during most sprints.
On the other hand, one has to consider that this does not ultimately refute that "caffeine loading", or rather binging on caffeine day by day, may well exhaust your adrenal reserves in a way that after a few weeks of epinephrine overload, you are so drained that it becomes hard to drag yourself to the gym. In this situation all the creatine in the world probably won't help you.

High Dose Caffeine Will NOT Allow You to Curl More Weight

Most PreWorkout products are loaden with caffeine. The reasoning behind that is twofold: Firstly, the caffeine will spike you up and thus may allow you to work more energetically. And secondly, caffeine is believed to be a potent ergogenic in itself, allowing you to lift that extra pound you would otherwise have to take off.

As far as the ergodicity of caffeine is concerned, a recent study which was part of Jared Coburns dissertation at the California State University (Coburn. 2010) suggests that these must be more of a systemic nature. Comparing the effects of a preworkout drink with either 0, 5 or 10 mg/kg caffeine Coburn found
no significant differences for maximal strength, RTD [rate of torque development], EMG [electromyographic] amplitude and frequency, MMG [mechanomyographic] amplitude, EMD [electromechanical delay] and PMD [phonomechanical delay]
in his 14 male volunteers. So, while related studies, such as the one done by Pontifex et al. (Pontifex. 2010), where athletes had to perform several consecutive bouts of sprinting, provide evidence for the ergogenic effect of caffeine, it does not appear to benefit isometric muscle actions of the elbow flexors within a single set - in how far the results would have been different, if, for example, the subjects had had to perform dropsets is another kettle of fish.

Brewing the Perfect Green Tea: Best Brewing Time and Temperature for Optimal Potency

Here is something for all of you who have always asked themselves how to prepare their tea to "get the most out of it". Well, I know normal people would go by taste, but are we normal? No! We want maximal antioxidant-content and a decent amount of caffeine to jack us up and this is where the results from a recent study (Ziaedini. 2010) come into play.

The scientists from the Iranian Institute of Research and Development in Chemical Industries investigated the effect of different brewing times and temperatures on the amount of antioxidants and caffeine you'll get in your tea. Here are the results (cf. table 1):

Obviously it takes a decent temperature of ~70°C to achieve maximal diffusion of the constituents in the short and in the long term. In spite of that, a close look at one of the graphs (cf. figure 1)

shows that even with decent temperatures (>70°C) it takes some time for the antioxidant content (in this case the infamous ECGC content) to achieve significant levels - and lets be honest, do you like, or even, can you really drink a tea that has been brewed for 10 or even 20 minutes? If you can, you're the man (or woman) - if not you probably better buy some capped extract ;-)
